A One-Day Tour to Machu Picchu with Peru Rail
To start the Machu Picchu tour, you will need to be in the city of Cusco at least one day before the tour begins. Cusco is located 1600 km southeast of Lima, Peru. The trains of the Peru Rail Company depart from Cusco at 6:00 a.m. There are two ways to reach Machu Picchu: by rail (using trains) or by trekking the ancient Inca Trail in two or four days. For this tour, we will use only the train service.
Itinerary Description:
We will pick you up at your hotel in the city of Cusco one hour before your train departure time. We will then take you to the train station located in the town of Poroy (30 minutes away), where you will board the train operated by «PERURAIL.» Your journey will begin with a destination of the town of «Aguas Calientes» (2000 meters above sea level), which lasts for 4 hours.
Upon arrival at the Aguas Calientes station, you can explore the town of the same name, have a snack, and wait until 11:30 a.m. to head to the bus station. You will ascend 400 meters in altitude on a zigzagging road for 30 minutes to reach the incredible world wonder, «The Sanctuary of Machu Picchu,» known as «The Lost City of the Incas.»
The guided tour begins exactly at 12:00 noon. Upon reaching the Machu Picchu citadel, you will go through the control point where you will present your entrance ticket. From this point, the guided excursion will start, and you will visit the main precincts of the city, such as the Main Plaza, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Solar Clock, the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows, and the cemeteries. The guided tour will last for over two hours. After it concludes, if you wish, you can have lunch at the Santuary Lodge Hotel. Another option you have is to return to the town of Aguas Calientes and have your meal at one of the various restaurants (lunch is not included in the package).
In the afternoon, you will take the return train (please arrive at the station 30 minutes before your train’s departure time). The return journey follows the same route as the outbound trip. Upon arriving at the train station, we will be waiting to take you back to your hotel.
